3 Steps to Combat FEAR

I was coaching a client and asked if they knew the acronym for FEAR.  They laughed and said F*ck Everything And Run? I joined them in that laughter. Yes, it was absolutely the wrong acronym but that’s what FEAR wants us to do when we have a goal we want to accomplish.

The correct acronym for FEAR is: FALSE – EVIDENCE – APPEARING – REAL

Your worst case scenario is just as likely as your best case scenario. FEAR holds us back and keeps us spinning on that damn hamster wheel of “worst case”. It paralyzes us and then we wonder why we can never accomplish our goals.

Here are 3 steps to combat fear:

  1. Write down your worst case scenario on paper. Then write down your best case scenario on paper. Yes – use paper. There is a psychological process when writing things vs. typing.
  2. Write what stops you from taking action due to your worst case scenario. Write what would move you into action based on your best case scenario.
  3. Then come up with daily micro goals based on the actions in step 2 for your best case scenario. Create daily goals for each week and after each week evaluate how well you completed everything. If something blocked you then you ask yourself, how is my FEAR getting in the way?

Example: Day one – Create a list of everything that needs to get done.

Day two – Do one task on that list.
