Do you ever wonder what it takes to be in a healthy relationship and suddenly you’re lost in thought? I can totally relate because after leaving a toxic relationship I wondered what it would take to build a healthy relationship. Well, it’s definitely not rocket science, phew! But I’ve got you girl with these 10 Requirements for a Healthy Relationship:
1. Self-love
The most important relationship you will ever have is with yourself. In order to fully show up for someone else, you need to fully show up in love with yourself. Remember, self-love is a journey and process. Even if you do not fully love yourself this does not mean you can’t be in a healthy relationship.
2. Communication
It can be really easy to default to communication that feels comfortable but maybe isn’t the most effective in a relationship. Healthy communication is listening to your partner and expressing your feelings using “I” statements. When you communicate using “you” statements it creates instant blame and does not create healthy dialogue.
3. Boundaries
You set the tone for your relationship by creating room for your needs and wants. Creating boundaries means that you establish certain ways that you want to be treated and how you want to treat yourself. This also defaults to practicing good self-care because you are focusing on yourself before you can show up for your partner.
4. Respect
Treating someone with respect is key to relationship building. This does not mean you have to agree with everything they do or say. What it does mean is that you respect their opinions and who they are. Respect goes a long way during disagreements and fights.
5. Independence
You are your own person no matter how much or how often you are with your partner. This is so important and often times overlooked. Stepping into your independence means that you are willing to have a healthy balance and enjoy doing things alone and with your partner.
6. Ownership
Taking a look at your part in an argument or disagreement is key. You may not have caused the argument but if you participated then it’s important to see where you could make improvements in the future. Taking ownership means that you’re willing to look inward and acknowledge your wrongs.
7. Vulnerability
My girl Brene Brown discusses this perfectly. In order to have a deep connection with your partner, you must be vulnerable. Sometimes it means saying, I love you first or initiating sex. All of these things feel uncomfortable to do but they are what brings us a connection.
8. Trust
Trust. It’s one of the biggest foundations of a relationship. And if you do not trust your partner then your relationship lacks stability. This can cause serious issues in your relationship. Being open and trusting your partner creates a beneficial support for one another.

9. Team Player
It takes two to tango. You’re not in this relationship alone. In order to grow together, you must each be a team player. Whether your partner is kicking ass or sad you can be there to support them. This doesn’t mean that you are responsible for their happiness, but are there to champion them through highs and lows.
10. Patience
A healthy relationship takes time to build, grow and evolve. It should never feel rushed or that you need to instantly make big life decisions together. It may take some patience on both sides to really get to know one another. It’s important that you feel secure in your relationship regardless of what issues arise.
