Should You Be Friends with Your Ex’s Friends?

Should you be friends with your ex’s friends? Being friends with your ex after a break up is hard enough. But when you have bonded with their friends and don’t want to break up with them things can get confusing. So where do you draw the line?

Just because you and your ex are no longer together does not mean that you have to end your relationships with their friends. Afterall, you may have dated for years or even a few months and grew a strong friendship. But sure, sometimes it can get awkward or weird if you and your ex are both invited to a mutual friends party. Here are a few things to consider when remaining friends with your ex’s friends (woah, tongue twista!).

Check in with your feelings

Check in with yourself. If it makes you feel upset to hear about your ex from the lips of your shared mutual friends take a step back. Ask yourself if your peace of mind around this is being compromised. If it is causing you more stress reconsider how you want to move forward with the friendship and your part in it. Let your mutual friends know your boundaries and ask that they respect them for your healing process.

Your ex begins dating someone new

Yeah, this can be very uncomfortable especially if you show up to the same thing and the new person is there. How involved do you want to be in your ex’s life? How often do you want to see your mutual friends? These are questions to really dig into and think about when deciding if it is truly healthy for you to be there.

When to say goodbye

And if it’s really becoming unbearable for you it is ok to end those friendships. Now, I am not saying pull out cold turkey see ya never. But maybe having an honest conversation with yourself to reflect and see how you are benefiting from being friends with them. If you are finding more inner harm than good then it is ok to let friendships go.
